Solar & Battery Installation Case Study

A Smarter, More Energy-Independent Home with Solar Partner

Project Overview

Solar Partner recently completed a solar PV and battery storage installation designed to help a homeowner reduce their reliance on grid electricity, make better use of renewable energy and gain greater control over their household energy consumption. The system combines a 9kWp solar PV array, an Eleven Energy 12.0kW inverter and four Galvani R14.5kWh batteries, providing substantial energy generation and battery storage capacity.

The System Installed

  • Solar PV: 9kWp solar panel installation
  • Inverter: Eleven Energy 12.0kW inverter
  • Battery storage: 4 × Galvani R14.5kWh batteries
  • Total nominal battery capacity: 58kWh

The system was designed to maximise the use of solar-generated electricity throughout the day, with battery storage providing additional flexibility to meet the home's energy requirements.

Reducing Reliance on Grid Electricity

One of the key benefits of this installation is how the homeowner now manages their electricity usage. During the day, the property is no longer importing electricity from the grid to meet its normal household demand. Instead, the home uses its solar generation and stored battery energy to power its electrical appliances. The homeowner also chooses to charge the batteries overnight, helping ensure the battery bank is sufficiently topped up for the following morning, particularly when dull weather limits solar generation. This approach combines solar generation, substantial battery storage and planned overnight charging to help maintain a reliable supply of energy for the household.

Real Energy Performance

Since the installation, the system has already recorded the following energy figures:

Energy measurementRecorded total
Solar electricity generated946kWh
Household electricity consumed485kWh
Electricity imported from the grid59kWh
Electricity exported to the grid457kWh

These figures demonstrate how the system is generating renewable electricity, meeting household demand and exporting surplus energy back to the grid. Despite recording 946kWh of solar generation, the property has imported just 59kWh of electricity over the same reporting period, although some of that import is intentionally used for overnight battery charging.

Making the Most of Solar Energy

With a large battery storage capacity, the homeowner can store energy for use when solar generation is lower, helping reduce dependence on electricity imports during the day. The ability to combine solar PV with intelligent inverter control and battery charging gives the homeowner greater flexibility over when electricity is generated, stored and consumed. As the system continues to operate, its performance can be monitored to assess generation, consumption, grid imports and exports over time.
